Actually I deliberately look up unusual names associated with areas I'm familiar with due to my interest in local history and genealogy. Palliser came to mind last Friday night as I knew they had connections with this county. On Sunday last, Neansai (pronounced - 'Nancy') my wife and I drove out the county to look up the Palliser grave, which we've seen a few times beforeand to refresh our memories, at Kilrossanty Church of Ireland (i.e. Protestant Church). We were aware that a bronze plaque had been placed there in memory of John Palliser in 1977. Perhaps you were there yourself? Regrettably we were unable attend, but one of our daughters was there. Being keen amateur photographers, we took 3 colour slides and some colour prints of the grave and plaque. These will eventually be processed. This also saved us writing down the text as we needed time to look ALL the other graves in this peaceful rural cemetery to see if there were any other Palliser connections. Capt. John Palliser is not mentioned on the elaborate 'gravestone' (if that's the correct term), but two females are. We felt they were sisters of his. More about this later. Surprisingly the plaque does not appear to be affixed to the gravestone, just placed there...insecurely. we got the same impression on visiting the place before. Also, for some reason only the two female relatives are mentioned on the gravestone......no mention of John Palliser engraved on it! Many Catholic graves here also, which suggests this was a Catholic cemetery before the Reformation. We took down all the first names and years of death off many of the headstones as we would like to look up these later on Gen Web and other sites. The nearby COMERAGH mountains (from the Gaelic ' abounding in hollows) look very attractive from this viewpoint. Have looked up and printed out a few of your pages and found them fascinating. The names Talbot and Otterington crop locally also, Also what I believe was the Palliser home had an infamous war crimnal from World War II living there until detected. Will have to look up more detailed information on this. Kind regards from Ireland. Will be in touch later. Am working off my son-in-laws computer and it's rather late. Only using the Internet over two months. Seán & Neansai O'Brien.

Firstly, thanks for a great homepage it was really a thrill to find a homepage all about Pallisers. I say this because recently I have been reading though my family tree as put together by my Great great grandfather Percy George Wilson. It goes back to John Palliser of Newby-Wiske [1639]who married Ursula Bethell of Allerton. As far as I can tell he is the brother of your 9x Great Grandfather Most Rev William Palliser Archbishop of Cashel. It really was great to see the picture of him[W P] in your gallery and to come across names [St Leger] I have been reading about these last few nights. There are pages upon pages of notes written by my gg grandfather and I hope one day to put together a clear and correct family map [tree]. I would love to get in contact with you via my husbands email address in his office and perhaps we can swap info. Bye.

Hi TJ Simmonds, Excellent home page. To add to your information I was born in Yorkshire in 1951 to Arthur and Winifred Palliser. I immigrated to Canada in 1974 with my wife Jane. We have two children born in Canada; Sarah aged 17 and Christopher 16. I am presently a Captain in the Canadian Coast Guard responsible for Marine Search and Rescue on the Pacific Coast. Unfortunately we are only able to trace the Palliser family back four generations. All apparently lived close to Bradford, Yorkshire. All the very best, John Palliser

Renia, Surprise!!! Alas I bring bad news: Neansai passed away peacefully on January 26th last after an illness lasting almost 9 years. She had been unwell since Nov. '97, when told Cancer (of the Larynx) erupted for the 3rd time.No more could be done for her. Was forced to retire myself on August 21st.....due to more problems following quadruple by-pass surgery in 1989, and anyhow our G.P. said 'Neansai was no longer fit to be left alone'. We had only two days of my retirement together.....the first at Annestown, searching all the headstones in the C. of I cemetery. I took notes on many....and the Palliser ones.....also some slides of the latter. These slides are still not processed due to the situation. Next day we spent walking on beach nearby but on 3rd day she began to go downhill. We still made the occasional foray but she seldom got out of car, due to the cold and other discomforts. Among these trips was one to the C. of I. cemetery at Stradbally and some others. I felt there might be other links. One Sunday we decided to explore GUILCAGH, outside Portlaw, and accidentally were allowed onto the route of a motor rally. It was a frightening experience, which I should have kicked up a row about because stewards also allowed cars coming in the opposite direction to proceed on the route also. We 'took refuge' at the entrance to Portlaw catholic Church. talking to a local there, he said he believed there was a man named PALLISTER living in village. Never got around to pursuing that. Then about two days after Christmas, I persuaded Neansai to come for another drive....and went back to Guilcagh. Took notes(since mislaid but around) of most of the names there; but no Pallisers. Neansai came in for 2 or 3 mins as I wanted her to see the picturesque church. After she died I used her compact camera (never used for our serious work) to photograph the grave, flowers, etc. Got film back only yesterday and lo and behold discovered the 1st two shots were taken by her in Guilcagh that day...one of me setting up my tripod and her last picture...the other side of the church. I was very saddened, as we have taken a very active part in amateur photography in the 32 counties since early 70's....and have a houseful of trophies to prove it. Won the National AV Competition in 1986....and runners up on 3 or more other occasions. Neansai was the first female in the country (or elsewhere) to be awarded a Distinction by the Irish Photographic Federation....for colour slides. Got the Licentiateship a second time with an AV show. Votes of Sympathy passed by many photographic groups, one in Trinity College, Dublin by the I.P.F. Will send you on her obituary and other literature when I've recovered, which is taking a long time. Then had to have a foot X-rayed a few hours ago in Regional Hospital as it's giving me trouble for over a year.....and maybe same with second foot. Am hoping it's not a circulation problem. As you can see I've not had a minute. In my searching discovered that a Col. Palliser was a landlord who owned the townland of CROHANE, twixt my home village of Killenaule and Ballingarry, in south Co. Tipperary. A friend (ex R.A.F.) and I are working on this. This surprised me as my closest living relative, Eileen Barrett, lives at Crohane! Will come up with more eventually, I hope. Best wishes, Seán. 26.03.99. Note new e-mail address (because of our interest in cemeteries, of course!).

I have been researching my Palliser line for some time now. I come from a line that immigrated to the U.S. in the 1860s. Two brothers, Christopher and John Palliser, came to the U.S. and established large families here. However, few Pallisers remain from either line. My grandmother (94 years)and her younger sister are Pallisers and still reside in the U.S. This line descended from John Palliser and Hannah Buckle from the East Ayton area of Yorkshire. John Palliser's parents were Christoper and Elizabeth Dunhill, also from the same general area of Yorkshire. Anyone see connections to their lines?

Isabella Palliser is my ggg grandmother who married William James Benger on 31DEC1825 at Saint Dunstan in the West, Middlesex, England. They were parents to Sarah Benger, born on 29JUL1832 and who married Alban James Bradgate, 4JUN1854 at the Parish Church of Holborn, West London, Middlesex. She died in 1909 in Wandsworth, Middlesex. Sarah Benger and Alban James Bradgate had six children, my great grandfather was a son, Alban Bradgate. I have a great deal of information about the descendants of this family, all with a Palliser blood connection. Please do not hesitate to contact me about any Palliser information, especially Palliser information relating to the early 1800's in the London area. I would be more that pleased to share all my information with anyone who finds a blood connection with me. It would be most exiting.

I "surfed" in because I am researching one of my wife's ancestral lines, McCullough. As we are having difficulties tracing the ancestors I an tracing the spousal lines in hopes of finding the McCullough. I would like to know if our Palliser/Palister is in your database. Our Palliser is a "Hannah Palliser" who was born May 17, 1806 and died February 1, 1838. I do not know where she was born or died. What I do know is that between 1831 and 1833 she and her husband, Charles McCullough, had three children, Jane, Mary Ann and Thomas McCullough and the children were bapsized at the Odelltown Methodist Church, Lacolle, Quebec, Canada. An Elizabeth Palliser signed as a witness on the baptismal certificates. I suspect that Hannah died and is buried in the Lacolle area, but I do not have proof. Charles McCullough and family remained in the Lacolle area for several generations and Charles died in 1889.This is all of the information that I have on her. If you have any information at all on Hannah, Elizabeth or the McCullough's, please let me know. Thank you in advance for checking your database. I have enjoyed browsing around your site and its links. It is very impressive. Sincerely, John W. Tower, Sr.

Hi, I never knew that there was so much information on the Palliser name. You have put together quite a web site. I congratulate you for your time and effort and dedication. Some time ago I started to look up the surname Pallister but came to a very short halt since I could not go any further than my father and his two brothers. All I could gather was thier discharge papers and medals awarded to them during World War II. Since finding your site my interest have now been renewed and after reading all you have on this site I still cannot determine what group I belong to. But after all these years with the information you have given me I concider myself very satisfied. Thank you so very, very much and God bless you. Dennis James Pallister

I am researching Palliser on my mother's line. Her mother was a Palliser born in Linzford (Newcastle) at the end of the 19th Century. I originate from Liverpool and have Palliser details back through to the end of the 18th C in Bishop Monkton (Group 14 I think?). I have logged on at an internet cafe in York - where I now live. I will try to contact you at some time re my Palliser details in the hope that they are of use to the Webpage. The e-mail address I have given is my work one. Good hunting.

Hi, My daughter received an e-mail from you regarding the Palliser surname and I find this all very interesting. We are Pallisers from Rigolet Labrador. We are Inuit. The story is that Sir Hugh Palliser was exploring Labrador and encountered the Inuit in the area and gave them his surname and that is how we ended up with the surname Palliser. It is also believed that Sir Hugh brought some of my Inuit relatives to England to meet the Queen. I don't know if that is a family myth or if there is some truth to the story. I would like to know more information. Thank you! Teresa Palliser

Sorry about the earlier note. If you have any info on my name I'd appreciate some help. My grandmother was Robina Cook from Scotland/Ireland. Her mother was Christina Cook. Robina met her husband, James Pallister-Young in Canada. That is the only info I have right now. Both grandparents are deceased. James died while serving in WW2. Robina (Ruby) lived in southern California. She died in 1988 age 76, I think. Thank-

The host of the guestbook withdrew their services a few years ago, so many visitors' comments are now lost. With the rise in family history research and its availability on the internet, guestbooks are no longer the best media for interested parties to show their interest. The increased use of laptops, iPads and iPhones means many people are almost permanently online and, possibly, some of the Facebook community groups may be the best media for such international communication.
